Infertility treatment can be a long and arduous process for many couples. While infertility treatment offers hope, there is no understating the fact that with every unsuccessful attempt to spawn life, an extra strain of emotion can be placed on couples.

The cause of infertility can be the result of a number of factors yet the one common denominator amongst men and women affected, is that infertility can result in a rollercoaster ride of emotion.

In the US alone, the cause of female infertility can be attributed to several internal factors yet those that have had the cause isolated and treated can in most cases count themselves fortunate. It’s the 10 per cent who cannot be given any known reason for their infertility that find it hard to come to terms with it. It can rip right at their heart strings and totally disrupt their dreams of raising a family and the resultant effect cannot be underestimated.

Male Infertility

For men, male infertility can be just as emotional in some instances and again, there are a number of varying circumstances which affect a man’s sperm level. The main two reasons are medically known as azoospermia and oligospermia. These relate to no sperm cells and very few sperm cells being produced.

The issue of male infertility has really only been taken seriously in the last couple of decades.This is not to suggest it wasn’t an issue in the past but there was an obvious misconception that infertility problems were simply the domain of women.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, women account for about 40% of infertility problems with the remainder attributed to male infertility and of course, unexplained fertility issues.

Male Infertility

As a woman, it’s important to keep in mind that if you suspect infertility in your life, then don’t immediately accept it as a given that it’s your problem. As a couple, you should be tackling this together and that means both of you need to check in with your doctor.

For men, one of the first courses of action is to have a semen analysis. This will usually follow an examination and is the first step in determining whether fertility issues are present.

Cause Of Male Infertility

There are several causes of male fertility issues but it’s not all bad news. In most instances, these can be rectified. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons which could have led to a male suffering fertility problems:

- Smoking can adversely affect a man’s sperm count. Research indicates it has an impact on the percentage of active sperm produced by a man.

- Drugs, either legal or illegal have been determined as having an effect on a man’s fertility. If you have taken drugs in the past then you need to tell your reproductive endocrinologist.

- Heat issues are often overlooked but need to be taken seriously. Excessive exercise that heats up the scrotum area can lower the quality and quantity of sperm. Similarly, avoid Jacuzzis and saunas which increase the body temperature.

- Consider nutrition intake as an important part of maintaining healthy sperm counts. Women are often recommended to maintain healthy eating habits because they are the ones who will hopefully carry the child. However, nutritional well being can combat male infertility. A diet rich in Vitamin C can help the man and general healthier eating habits can help the couple and their entire family

- Stress is an old enemy in many areas of life and can also impact fertility. A high level of stress has shown to affect male infertility. Ejaculating too frequently or too infrequently could cause low sperm quality. Infrequent ejaculation leads to old, low-motility sperm.

Cause Of Male Infertility – Some Interesting Facts

In the US, of the 6 million people affected by infertility today, about 40 per cent of these are men. The cause of male infertility could be attributed to a number of factors but the two best known are azoospermia and oligospermia. The former is when no sperm cells are produced and the latter is when very few sperm cells are produced. Genetic disorders are also attributed to the cause of male infertility but these are rare.

It’s interesting to look at a study conducted in 2001 and some of the reasons give for the cause of male infertility:

Vasectomy – 56% of men who participated in the study were seeking to reverse the procedure

Varicocele – 14% of men in the study had this as main reason of cause of male infertility

Absence of sperm – This was found as cause of male infertility in 6% of men who took part in the study.

Eight percent of the study sample could not cite a specific reason for their infertility.

Age is another factor of male infertility. In an early study, it was determined that sperm quantity and quality do not decline until the age of 64 and another study showed that the infertility rates registered were in men under the age of 39. Genetic defects in sperm have been another factor worth taking in consideration which has seen an increase in advanced age men. There are also these reasons to consider:

Low sperm count – Almost all major physical or mental or emotional stress can cause low sperm count.

Emotional stress – This interferes with the GnRH hormone and results in low sperm count.

Sexual issues – In almost 1% of cases that have been registered with impotence and premature ejaculation are due to problems in the relationship.

Testicular overheating – overheating can be caused by saunas, fever or a hot tub; they can temporarily cause the sperm count to be low and are thus a cause of male infertility.

Drug abuse – heavy use of marijuana, cocaine and smoking can be as well a temporary cause of low sperm count.

It should also be mentioned that malnutrition or nutrient deficiencies as well as obesity can all contribute to low sperm count leading to a cause of male infertility.

As you can see, that is quite a list of reasons but if there is any good news to report it’s that the cause of male infertility in a lot cases can be detected and also treated. Infertility is an issue that affects both men and women and when it’s detected in either partner, it can cause a rollercoaster of emotion. For men, the inability to produce fertile sperm probably isn’t an issue until it’s crunch time and can often leave a man feeling a little incomplete.
