Infertility treatment can be a long and arduous process for many couples. While infertility treatment offers hope, there is no understating the fact that with every unsuccessful attempt to spawn life, an extra strain of emotion can be placed on couples.

The cause of infertility can be the result of a number of factors yet the one common denominator amongst men and women affected, is that infertility can result in a rollercoaster ride of emotion.

In the US alone, the cause of female infertility can be attributed to several internal factors yet those that have had the cause isolated and treated can in most cases count themselves fortunate. It’s the 10 per cent who cannot be given any known reason for their infertility that find it hard to come to terms with it. It can rip right at their heart strings and totally disrupt their dreams of raising a family and the resultant effect cannot be underestimated.

Male Infertility

For men, male infertility can be just as emotional in some instances and again, there are a number of varying circumstances which affect a man’s sperm level. The main two reasons are medically known as azoospermia and oligospermia. These relate to no sperm cells and very few sperm cells being produced.

Infertility and Des Exposure

Women who were pregnant between 1938 and 1971 were commonly given diethylstilbestrol (DES) by their doctors. DES is a synthetic estrogen. Doctors used to believe that DES helped to reduce the number of miscarriages and premature births that women were experiencing. If your mother was given DES, then you may experience some infertility problems or other health complications as a result.

First, try to determine if your mother was given DES during her pregnancy with you. This may be hard to determine because it may have happened so long ago. Also, many doctors just told their patients that they were taking vitamins. The really sad part about this is that DES exposure can cause cancer and infertility in the women that took it, as well as their children. If you determine that you were exposed to DES, then you should inform your doctor or infertility specialist so that special care can be taken, especially during infertility treatment.

Being exposed to DES in utero puts women at a higher risk for pregnancy complications such as ectopic pregnancies, miscarriage or premature deliveries. This does not mean that you are incapable of becoming pregnant and carrying to term if you have been exposed to DES. Many women do become pregnant and carry to term despite their exposure. The reasons that DES has negative effects on women are not entirely clear. It is widely believed that the DES exposure affects the formation of the cervix. If this is true, then it can explain why exposed women have a higher number of miscarriages than non-exposed women.

If you suspect that you have been exposed to DES, then it is very important to work closely with your family physician or infertility specialist. Your doctor should order screenings to see if you have any of the negative health effects of DES exposure. Breast exams and mammograms should be performed regularly. Self breast exams should be performed at least monthly so that you can catch changes early. You should receive regular pelvic exams and PAP smears. Your doctor may do an extra type of PAP smear to check for clear cell adencarcinoma, believed to be caused by DES exposure.

Clear cell adencarcinoma is the type of cancer believed to be linked to DES exposure. This is a rare type of cancer that affects the vagina and cervix. Survival rates are very high for this type of cancer. The most common treatment for clear cell adencarcinoma is surgery. The surgery usually includes the removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Occasionally the vagina, or parts of the vagina, must also be removed. The surrounding lymph glands may also be removed. Radiation may also be used to treat the cancer.

Work closely with a caring physician or infertility specialist that understands what you could be facing. If it is determined that you were exposed to DES, then you will need special health care as well as special pregnancy monitoring in your quest to conquer infertility.

How to Help: Supporting an Infertile Couple

Most couples are very surprised when they discover that they may be infertile. This can be an emotional blow to a family. The couple dealing with infertility can really be in for a roller coaster ride of draining emotional experiences. Seeing someone you love go through something so complicated can be hard for family and friends as well. You may feel very sad and helpless when talking with the couple. You may feel like you should offer advice.

Keep in mind that you are not an infertility specialist and you have no way of knowing what infertility treatment may be best for the ones you love. Be careful about finding a lot of information online and offering it up as a solution to all of their problems. Many couples experiencing infertility are very deeply affected by their problem and may react irrationally to suggestions from family and friends. Dealing with infertility is a very personal journey that couples must go through together.

Remember that the couple is probably having trouble dealing with their infertility. Men and women react differently to infertility and some may consider their partner’s reaction to be the wrong one. This can really cause the couple to be in an uphill battle with each other. You offering up solutions is not going to solve all of their problems. You may only be giving them more to deal with. This can severely impact relationships, so you should proceed carefully when offering support and advice.

Do not get discouraged, there are ways that you can offer support without causing more harm than good. You can still be a pillar for the couple to lean on. You can be supportive without intruding on personal matters. Let the couple come to you with information rather than constantly prying for the scoop. Let them know that you are here if they need you, but you understand that this can be a very personal matter. Be there when they want to talk. Don’t discount their fears because they can be very real. Being afraid and talking about it to a third party can be very therapeutic for a couple. Offer perspective whenever possible, but don’t pretend to completely understand, as every situation is different.

One thing to remember is that the couple you care about is feeling very much out of control in a lot of ways. You can offer constructive support by giving them control whenever possible. Asking how you can help and putting them in control of dictating your role can help them feel supported without giving them the impression that they need to be saved. If they would like for you to stay out of it, then stay out of it. Let them know that you respect that decision and that you will be there for them if they need you. Support the decisions that they make as far as treatments are concerned. Wish them well, but try not to speculate on whether certain treatments will work. Offer as much support as needed without going overboard and you will be a great asset to the struggling couple.

Coming up with a reason for infertility is one of the most baffling experiences anyone can go through. You see, there are too many variables at play when infertility is suspected and “nailing” it down to one specific cause is sometimes like throwing darts at a miniature dart board.

One thing to remember – infertility is not just a female problem. This is a major misconception and until understood by couples, can cause a lot of grief within a household.

It’s vitally important for men to realize they could very well be the problem. No “finger pointing” should ever take place and couples need to tackle fertility problems together.

Testing For Infertility

The main reason for infertility which affects men is associated with sperm. Low sperm counts, quality of sperm and it’s lifetime all figure prominently in the fertility stakes.

Men need to see their doctor as soon as possible. In fact, even before the woman does. Once it’s established there is no problem then one of the processes of elimination – a major one has been taken care of and the next stage of investigation can begin.

There are many reasons why infertility can play havoc with men. Here’s just a few for starters:

- history of smoking or drug abuse
- nutrition problems
- stress
- heating of the scrotum due to things like excessive exercise

There are many more and your doctor is best placed to assess and pinpoint the problem area. The good news is, many of these issues can be overcome without too much fuss.

Causes Of Female Infertility

When it comes down to a reason for infertility with women, the most common reason for infertility is a disorder found in ovulation. This problem will prevent the development of a viable egg and can include a blockage of the fallopian tubes.

This can be caused by endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, adhesions and scarring or poor amounts of ovarian reserves. Ovarian failure is usually caused by aging but an also be caused by other factors.

Often times it can be a defect in the female anatomy that restricts the movement of the egg into the uterus or keeps the egg from being implanted.

PCOS(Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is another major reason for infertility in women but the interesting thing is, it’s still somewhat of a mystery. To learn more about PCOS talk with your doctor.

It’s a minefield of hope in many cases but the good news is that the reason for infertility once found means there is usually an excellent chance of rectifying the problem. It’s unexplained infertility issues which can be emotionally trying.

Metformin And Infertility – Is Metformin The Solution For Infertility?

Is there a connection with metformin and infertility. There seems to have been some excitement in the use of metformin as an assist in helping women with fertility issues.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS) is regarded as the biggest culprit in female infertility but studies indicate the use of metformin for infertility may have benefits in assisting women to become pregnant. While studies are not absolutely conclusive, it seems there is some correlation in the use of metformin and the resumption of ovulation in women going through fertility issues.

What Is Metformin?

In a nutshell, metformin has been used as a means for Type 2 Diabetes patients to help them control their blood glucose levels. Metformin is not available for use by everyone; in fact, the FDA has approved it’s use specifically for those suffering Type 2 Diabetes.

The problem with recommending metformin for infertility is the fact that while there are apparent benefits, there are risks also. Questions such as… “is it simply a fluke that a women has been able to become pregnant after being on metformin?”

That’s a legitimate question and while studies indicate that the fluke aspect may be a harsh assumption, the fact remains that until a drug is proven conclusively that it has benefits for a specific condition then it’s a little difficult to be singing it’s praises from the roof tops.

But this article wasn’t meant to either condemn or promote metformin as a solution for infertility but where there’s some light at the end of the tunnel there is always hope.

Infertility Solutions

Just a few decades ago, the most common medication for infertility in women was gonadotropin triggering hormones and clomiphene citrate.

Today the science has advanced by leaps and bounds, and every day there is something more added to the arsenal we have for fighting off this affliction. It has been found that metformin is extraordinarily potent when the woman is infertile and at the same time has problems with blood sugar. If you look at this, you can definitely link metformin with infertility.

The question this article wants to raise is has metformin been accidentally discovered as a solid treatment option for infertility? That’s a fair question. The use of metformin with infertility issues is likely to gather pace with more studies being conducted.

The fact metformin was approved for use in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes and now seems to benefit other conditions is not unlike science and medicine. Some of the greatest discoveries have been accidental. Is this one of them?

Infertility Testing – Why The Guy May Have Fertility Issues

The need for infertility testing needs to involve both the male and female. In other words, don’t assume the female is the one who is having fertility issues.

This is a mistake which is all too common and in recent years, education directed to male infertility testing has gathered momentum.

Home testing kits are available for both men and women. Men with low sperm counts are a real issue in the world of infertility and it’s important to consider all options when trying to find an underlying cause for fertility problems.

Male Infertility

There are many reasons which could contribute to a low sperm count in men. Substance abuse and stress are two of the more common causes. Home testing is not a daunting thing at all. You can have your result in just several minutes. This procedure is painless and involves screening the sperm for quantity, quality and lifespan of the sperm.

Essentially, testing is simply a way of finding the level of concentration of the sperm in the male semen. This method of infertility testing will measure the sperm as being above or below the cut-off of twenty million sperm cells per milliliter.

It may require several tests but if the majority indicate the sperm count as being less than twenty million cells per milliliter, this may be an indication that the male has fertility issues.

Once you have established this then it’s time to visit your doctor. In many cases, low sperm count issues could be turned around quickly depending on the issues causing it. On the other hand, if testing reveals no abnormalities then you have eliminated one possible source of fertility problems.

Female Infertility

Once the male has undergone testing and has met all the requirements to determine there are no fertility problems, then it’s time concentrate on the female.

Again, home infertility testing methods are available but before you begin, it may be beneficial to visit your doctor and discuss your concerns with them. To assume after only several months of trying to conceive that you are infertile is premature.

History shows despite the mental trauma couples facing these issues go through, in most cases, they are resolved with a happy ending.

Female infertility is an issue that most times, only becomes one when the time to have children arrives. Take Marty and Kym. A young couple who both had a strong maternal instinct and decided to bring a child into the world after 5 years of marriage. A further year went by and Marty still couldn’t conceive. That’s when the alarm bells went off.

For this young couple the thought of either male or female infertility was the last thing that went through their minds. That is, until it came time to have children.A meeting with their doctor followed a a new chapter in their lives was about to begin. Female infertility can be an emotional rollercoaster for a woman with the strongest of maternal instincts and when those two words, female infertility, are thrown at her, it can be a devastating moment. But it’s not the end of the world.
Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Marty and Kym’s doctor proceeded to take a very detailed look at their medical and family histories and came up with the following information:

A Finding Of An Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Even though few women have a textbook-like 28-day cycle; many have their period only once a couple of months. Any cycle less than 24 days or more than 35 days is considered irregular and can lead to a meeting with a reproductive endocrinologist.

Detected Irregular Ovulation

One assumes that if the menstrual cycle is regular, she must be ovulating, but this is incorrect as not all women ovulate every cycle. Since there is usually a 24 hour window where she is most fertile, calculating if and when she ovulates is crucial to eliminate female infertility

A Report On Their Family History

You find out your mom had trouble conceiving you and your husband’s sister had to go through infertility treatments before she had her first child gives you a higher probability of having to go through the female infertility screening questions.

The Age Factor

Women 35 and older are not automatically female infertility candidates. A forty year old could have no problem conceiving. It is just that the number of eggs a woman produces each cycle diminishes in her mid-thirties and therefore the chances of getting pregnant become less in comparison to someone in their early twenties with all other factors being constant.
