Pregnancy Insurance – Trying To Make Sense Of It All

Pregnancy insurance seems to be somewhat of a “dirty word” if the current state of insurance available to people with fertility issues is any guide. Infertility groups have been “grappling” with the issue of insurance health coverage for some time now and in some states of the U.S. there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

It seems there may be a question regarding the validity of infertility because it is not a life threatening condition.

Why Is Insurance Hard To Get?

Infertility is an emotional situation for those experiencing it. Many couples who want to go on more advanced treatment programs are often restricted because of the hefty costs associated with them. Their only chance would be through pregnancy insurance coverage. While there are companies who provide insurance for fertility issues, it’s often very limited. For example, coverage may include diagnosis and some basic treatment methods but exclude more advanced methods such as IVF.

One of the problems with infertility health insurance coverage is couples who take it on aren’t aware of some of the restrictions associated with their policies. If they decide to go the advanced treatment route and later discover the procedure wasn’t covered as part of their policy, footing the bill adds further to their emotional nightmare. Quite often, the bill for treatment including drugs can amount to thousands of dollars.

Employer Plans

In the US, a good deal of medical/health insurances are taken through employer contributed plans. If your employer is providing you with the avenue to medical insurance check the legal terms and conditions carefully.Your employer will often have the say on the options covered with these plans. About 20 per cent will include pregnancy insurance amongst the conditions which are covered but the majority don’t.

An argument against insurance coverage for fertility issues is those suffering from it are considered a minority group. The cost to the average tax payer would increase. Arguments for infertility coverage will say that this argument can also be made against other conditions.

Who Is Eligible For Pregnancy Insurance

Before you become discouraged and decide not to pursue insurance coverage it may pay to check the laws regarding coverage in your state. In the US, several states now have mandates requiring employees with over a certain number of employees to include some form of infertility coverage with their health plans.

Remember, if you have taken out a plan thinking fertility issues are automatically covered you could be in for a rude shock when it comes time to pay the bill. Check your coverage policy before signing and paying your premiums.

Sorting Through The Issues Of Infertility Health Insurance Coverage

Dealing with infertility issues is hard enough for couples; dealing with associated issues such as insurance adds to the stress. Infertility health insurance coverage may be the last thing on a person’s mind at this time but taking a few moments to understand what you are eligible for could help ease any impending financial burden later on.

Many health insurers it seem are still coming to terms with the fact infertility is an insurable condition and don’t carry any coverage. If a claim is made and denied, there are several steps you could take before accepting the umpire’s decision.

Recommended Action

- Check the state mandate and make sure that the state you live in has mandates for infertility insurance coverage.

- Be sure to read your insurance contract carefully. The majority of people get their insurance through their employer who in most cases provides just a summary to the employee. If this is your situation, ask for your insurance contract copy as soon as possible. Your employer is required by law to provide you with a copy.

- Check to see if fertility health insurance coverage is not mentioned. This is why it’s important to read contracts carefully. It’s important to make sure if such clauses are included.

- If a clause in the contract stipulates such exclusion, check to see if it excludes treatment only or diagnosis as well. Remember, the insurance company can only deny what they have stipulated in the contract and nothing else besides it.

Why Infertility Health Insurance Coverage May Have Been Denied In The Past

- Infertility is not an illness
- Treatment of infertility does not require medical treatment
- Treatment of infertility is experimental and it may never get any results thus being a never ending process.

It sounds like a large maze of legal jargon to get through and most people tend to retreat into their shells when faced with contracts. If you ever get to a stage of having to appeal a denied claim then it may be well worthwhile seeking legal counsel.

As mentioned earlier, dealing with infertility is tough enough let alone having to sought through legal issues at the same time. Hiring a lawyer, financially permitting, could be a smart move. You should have a right to some sort of infertility health insurance coverage so at least check out what level of legal help is available.
