The issue of secondary infertility is somewhat of a mystery as well as nuisance value to many couples who experience it. Why?

Well, simply because a couple has proven they can already conceive a child yet trying for another and striking a road block such as this can be hard to come to terms with.

What Is Secondary Infertility?

In a nutshell, secondary infertility is being unable to conceive a child after already having had one child. Simply put, a couple will have their first child and let’s say it’s girl. So they then decide to try again for a boy to complete their family. Only problem is, nothing happens.

Despite having proven they are capable of experiencing pregnancy the first time around, the second time is proving a real challenge. What’s the problem? It’s frustrating and in many respects, just as stressful as trying to conceive the first time round.

What Can You Do?

If secondary infertility has been confirmed in your life here are some steps you should consider taking:

- Have a blood test done to check serum progesterone levels as well as levels of serum gonadotrophins and prolactin

- Visit an infertility specialist for diagnosis

- Consider other tests including pelvic ultrasound, hysterosalpingography and laparoscopy

- If the cause has been determined then take the necessary steps to overcome it. You made need to make lifestyle changes such as diet. Cut out things such as alcohol and coffee and refrain from taking unnecessary drug treatments. Even consider alternative treatments.

These are not the be all and end all but just some of the measures you might consider adopting. Your specialist will definitely help you in this regard and point you in the right direction.

Causes Of Secondary Infertility

Causes of secondary infertility can be a “dime a dozen.” Many of the medical conditions namely internal disorders, such as hormonal, ovarian and ovulation problems, tube or peritoneal causes, hypothalamic-pituitary causes, cervical, vaginal and uterine problems, and genetic causes apply here as well. Again, the problem can lie with both the woman’s reproductive system and the man’s reproductive system, or with both partners.

However, most of the times, these are not the only causes. A secondary infertility is commonly caused by age, new partners, stress, taking up alcohol or certain drugs that causes infertility, food, coffee, and many more reasons beyond these. Infertility starts to kick in slowly from age 30 and more rapidly from age 35 onwards in women.

Some women develop hormonal problems which affect the ovulation process, or having not enough mucus to allow the sperm to move freely, or it is too thick and sticky, or the mucus is unreceptive to the partner’s sperm. The mucus, which is supposed to help the sperm to swim up to uterus to meet the egg, fails.

Or it is also possible that a dormant health problem which may have existed when you conceived before but did not affect the pregnancy is active now and it interrupts the current conception. This may include damage to the uterus or fallopian tubes caused by endometriosis, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), fibroids, diseases such diabetes, or any other ovarian or ovulation problems.

There are so many factors which can affect fertility and if infertility is a factor in your life right now, then you are no doubt in the stage of trying to find a cause. Remember, 70-80% of infertility issues are explained so the odds are in your favor.

One issue which may be worth exploring is the issue of progesterone and infertility. Progesterone is important during the reproductive period in it’s support role during the gestation period.

Conception needs everything to be working in it’s favor which is one of the reasons conceiving a child is considered such a wonderful experience however, it doesn’t take a lot to go wrong to throw the chances of conception off track.

Progesterone is one of these factors and if it is lacking, then the chances of a fertilized egg and fetus surviving this initial launch will be severely diminished.

The Role Of Progesterone

When infertility is affecting you it’s important to get a good understanding of the reproductive process. No, it doesn’t mean you’ll solve your fertility issues by simply knowing but it will give you a greater appreciation of how complex this whole process can be.

During a woman’s ovulation period, her progesterone level increase significantly. From as low as 2 miligrams, they can escalate to up to 30 a day and this obviously is the prime time for fertilization to take place. If it fails within 8-12 days then they back off considerably and the menstrual cycle takes effect.

The Importance Of Progesterone

The incidence of progesterone and infertility can occur when there is a lack of progesterone in a woman’s body for a fertilized egg to survive. When you have enough progesterone in your body, the progesterone will help to maintain the Secretory endometrium which can then feed the ovum and result in an embryo. When progesterone levels are higher the sex drive will go up increasing the chances to conceive your child as well.

Lack of progesterone means the body acts naturally and will generally the endometrium which means the embryo will be lost. This is referred to as premature shedding of the endometrium.

Now you can see how progesterone and infertility can go together for conceiving your child. You can seek the advice of your doctor and have him run some blood tests on your progesterone level in your body.

This will help put some perspective to the situation and help you to find out if this chemical imbalance is the factor for your infertility. If you do find out this is the source of the problem, you can work on a solution for medicines prescribed by you from your physician.

Progesterone levels in women will decrease naturally as they get older and getting them back to the required levels for conception is part of the treatment process. Simple medication can be the solution to your infertility problem and you will finally be able to get back on track with your plan of conception. Understanding progesterone and infertility can make the difference in your life.

Understanding An Infertility Drug

Infertility issues affect about one in six couples. While each case is generally different the fact remains that infertility is the underlying cause and fathoming a reason why can often be an emotional time. The one constant is treatment and this varies in relation to the extent of a person’s infertility.

Depending on whether infertility is confirmed in either the male or female, an infertility drug is given as a form of medication to boost fertility production. Determining the meaning of an infertility drug ; it’s basically medication administered to increase a person’s chances of conception followed by a successful pregnancy. Infertility drug mainly refers to medications that impersonate or stimulate the production of the hormones necessary for conception.

Examining A Series Of Infertility Drugs

Let’s take a look at Human Menopausal Gonadotropin or Menotropin (Pergonal). Developed as an extract from urine taken from menopausal women it contains Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and it’s role is to encourage ovulation by stimulation of the ovaries to produce more follicles. In turn, this then increases the number of eggs. In the case of an infertile male, the same medication is administered to encourage testosterone production which in turn eventually increases the production of sperm.

What Is Clomiphene Citrate.

Clomiphene Citrate is described as an anti estrogen and it’s role is that it acts on the brain to encourage the release of the gonadotropic hormones or gonadotropin or any one of three glycoprotein hormones produced by the anterior pituitary gland or the placenta. This medication is given orally in the early part of the cycle and works to induce ovulation. It’s also used in men exhibiting low sperm counts in turn building what is termed as spermatogenesis.

The third in the series of infertility drugs is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. This infertility drug can be described as a lone hormone which acts to enhance the developing follicles in turn activating egg release from the matured follicle. Again, this particular hormone is used in men to encourage sperm production.

Progesterone is one of the better known infertility drugs. Women produce this hormone naturally and it acts by preparing the lining of the uterus prior to embryo placement or the fertilized egg. Progesterone strengthens the lining so it will be strong enough to support a developing fetus as well as protecting the pregnancy from possible bleeding.

Another infertility drug is known as Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). Generally found in other drugs, a patient has the option of receiving it through hormone injection. It’s role is well known; basically it stimulates ovary production which in turn encourages production of follicles and increases the number of eggs produced.

Another follicle enhancing infertility drug is known as Urofollitropin or Metrodin. It is a hormone although it’s administered without LH. It’s used in women who have too little FSH and too much LH.
